봄의 향기가 거리를 물들이는 5월, 서울 인사동 두고갤러리에 형형색색의 코끼리들이 찾아온다. 두고갤러리(서울시 종로구 인사동길 35-4 마루아트 신관 1층)는 오는 5월 1일(금)부터 30일(토)까지 남서목(Nam Seo Mok) 작가의 개인전 “복 주는 코끼리”를 개최한다. '5월의 아트페어' 기획 시리즈의 일환으로 마련된 이번 전시는 작가의 16번째 초대·개인전이자 17번째 아트페어 참가작으로 구성된다.

As May breathes new life into the streets of Insadong, Gallery Dugo (1F, Maru Art New Building, 35-4 Insadong-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul) welcomes a vibrant gathering of elephants to its walls. Running from May 1 (Fri) to May 30 (Sat), 2026, the exhibition "The Elephant of Good Fortune" marks the artist's 16th solo/invitational show and her 17th art fair participation — presented as part of Gallery Dugo's "May Art Fair" series.

코끼리는 동물 중 가장 큰 몸집을 지니면서도 우직하고 온순하며, 예로부터 동양 문화권에서 부(富)와 장수(長壽)를 상징해 온 존재다. 남서목 작가는 이 특별한 동물에서 가족 한 명 한 명의 모습을 발견했다. 각자의 개성과 취향, 고유한 색깔을 지닌 가족 구성원들을 코끼리로 의인화하고, 그들이 함께 만들어 내는 화목과 기쁨, 사랑의 순간들을 화려하고 생동감 넘치는 화폭 위에 펼쳐 놓았다.

The elephant — the largest of all land animals, yet known for its gentleness and loyalty — has long been revered in Eastern culture as a symbol of wealth and longevity. In this creature, Nam Seo Mok saw a reflection of her own family. Each elephant in her paintings is a personification of a family member, rendered with their own character, temperament, and color. Together, they compose a joyful tableau of familial warmth, unity, and love.

“우리 내면의 세계를 코끼리로 표현해서 모두가 화려하고 즐거워하며 기쁨을 주는 코끼리로 의인화시켜 보았고, 가정의 특성과 성격과 취향, 자신의 색상을 가족의 융화와 단결 화목, 기쁨 즐거움을 그림으로 담았습니다.”

전시 대표작 <복주는 코끼리>(45.5×53.0cm)는 작가의 작품 세계를 압축해 보여 주는 한 점이다. 노랑·초록·보라를 대담하게 교차시킨 배경 위로 단순화된 코끼리 형상이 당당하게 자리를 잡고, 크고 작은 원형 모티프들이 화면 곳곳에 흩뿌려지며 경쾌한 리듬감을 만들어 낸다. 특히 반짝이는 글리터 텍스처의 활용은 '복이 쏟아지는 순간'을 시각적으로 구현하며, 보는 이로 하여금 저절로 미소 짓게 만드는 힘을 지닌다.

The exhibition's centrepiece, The Elephant of Good Fortune (45.5×53.0 cm), encapsulates the artist's vision in a single canvas. A boldly simplified elephant stands proud against a backdrop of interwoven yellows, greens, and purples, while circular motifs scatter across the surface like gentle ripples. The shimmering glitter texture — a signature touch — seems to make good fortune itself visible, inviting an instinctive smile from every viewer.

남서목 작가는 한국미술협회·대구미술협회 회원이자 달서구미술협회 이사로 활동하며 국내 미술계에 깊이 뿌리를 내려 왔다. 동시에 라오스·우즈베키스탄·튀르키예·인도·중국 등 해외 그룹 초대전과 파리 루브르박물관 초대개인전을 통해 국제적인 활동 반경을 넓혀 왔다. 한국예술작가연합회 기획실장을 맡고 있으며, 신표현주의 회원으로서 현대미술의 흐름 속에서 자신만의 언어를 꾸준히 다듬어 가고 있다.

Nam Seo Mok is a member of the Korea Fine Arts Association and the Daegu Fine Arts Association, and serves as a board director of the Dalseogu Fine Arts Association. Internationally, she has participated in group exhibitions in Laos, Uzbekistan, Türkiye, India, and China, and held an invitational solo show at the Louvre Museum in Paris. She currently serves as Planning Director of the Korea Artists Association and is a member of the Neo-Expressionism group, steadily forging her own visual language within the currents of contemporary art.
