도화 김소영 작가, 뉴욕 첫 개인전 ‘CERAMIC PAINTINGS’ 개최… “도자와 회화의 경계를 넘다”

한국의 젊은 현대미술가 도화 김(Dohwa Kim) 작가가 미국 뉴욕에서 첫 개인전을 개최하며 글로벌 무대에 본격적인 첫발을 내디뎠다.

이번 전시는 뉴욕 퀸즈 아스토리아에 위치한 JAKUPSIL 갤러리에서 열리는 『CERAMIC PAINTINGS』전으로, 오는 6월 25일부터 7월 31일까지 진행된다. 오프닝 리셉션은 6월 26일 오후 6시부터 8시까지 개최된다.

도화 김 작가는 그동안 SNS를 통해 자신만의 예술 세계를 꾸준히 공유하며 대중과 소통해 왔다. 특히 회화와 도예를 융합한 독창적인 작업으로 국내외 컬렉터와 관람객들의 관심을 받아왔다.

이번 뉴욕 개인전은 작가에게 더욱 특별한 의미를 지닌다. 그는 2023년 9월, 뉴욕에서 개인전을 열겠다는 꿈 하나만으로 연고도 없는 도시를 처음 찾았다. 이후 2025년 한 해 동안 다섯 차례에 걸쳐 뉴욕을 오가며 현지 아트페어와 다양한 전시에 참여했고, 수많은 갤러리와 예술 관계자들을 직접 만나며 자신만의 네트워크를 구축해 왔다.

그 결과 이번 전시는 레지던시 형태의 특별 프로그램을 통해 성사됐다. 작가는 항공료와 숙박, 전시 공간 지원을 받으며 뉴욕에 체류하고 있으며, 현재 맨해튼의 도자기 공방과 전시장을 오가며 작품 제작에 몰두하고 있다.

전시 제목인 ‘CERAMIC PAINTINGS’는 작가의 작업 세계를 가장 잘 보여주는 키워드다. 전통적인 회화의 평면성과 도자의 물성을 결합해 하나의 새로운 시각 언어를 제시한다. 도자 표면 위에 펼쳐지는 회화적 표현과 질감, 그리고 시간의 흔적은 자연과 기억, 인간의 감정을 섬세하게 담아내며 관람객들에게 색다른 경험을 선사한다.

전시에는 도자와 회화가 결합된 대표작들을 비롯해 뉴욕 체류 기간 동안 새롭게 제작한 아크릴 및 수채화 작업도 함께 선보일 예정이다. 작가는 전시 기간 동안 현장에 상주하며 관람객들과 직접 소통하는 시간도 마련한다.

Korean Artist Dohwa Kim Holds Her First Solo Exhibition in New York, “CERAMIC PAINTINGS”

Korean contemporary artist Dohwa Kim is presenting her first solo exhibition in New York, marking a significant milestone in her international artistic journey.

Titled “CERAMIC PAINTINGS,” the exhibition is being held at JAKUPSIL Gallery in Astoria, Queens, from June 25 through July 31, 2026. The opening reception will take place on June 26 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Known for her unique artistic language that combines painting and ceramics, Kim has built a growing audience through both exhibitions and social media, where she openly shares her creative process and artistic vision.

This exhibition carries special meaning for the artist. In September 2023, Kim traveled to New York for the first time with a single dream—to someday hold a solo exhibition in the city. Throughout 2025, she made five separate trips to New York, participating in art fairs and exhibitions while actively building relationships within the local art community.

Those efforts have now culminated in this solo exhibition, supported through a residency-style program that provides travel expenses, accommodation, and exhibition space. Kim is currently based in New York, working between a ceramics studio in Manhattan and the gallery itself.

The exhibition title, “CERAMIC PAINTINGS,” reflects the essence of Kim’s artistic practice. By merging the physicality of ceramics with the expressive qualities of painting, she creates a distinctive visual language that blurs the boundaries between medium and discipline.

Her works explore themes of memory, nature, emotion, and the passage of time. Textured ceramic surfaces become painterly landscapes, inviting viewers to experience both material depth and emotional resonance.

The exhibition features Kim’s signature ceramic-based works alongside newly created acrylic and watercolor pieces produced during her stay in New York. Visitors will also have opportunities to meet the artist, who will be present at the gallery throughout much of the exhibition period.

“Three years ago, I came to New York with nothing but a dream of holding a solo exhibition here,” said Kim. “There were many challenges and uncertainties along the way, but art continued to open new doors. I hope this exhibition becomes the beginning of a new chapter in my artistic journey.”

As a rising Korean artist steps onto the New York art scene, the exhibition is expected to attract attention from collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts interested in innovative contemporary practices that bridge painting and ceramics.
