Los Angeles, CA – CMAY Gallery presents “The Good Thief,” an exhibition of new paintings by Nathan Redwood. This show marks the artist’s second solo exhibition at the gallery, featuring an engaging collection of smaller works on paper in the front gallery and large, dynamic paintings in the expansive back space.

Redwood is known for enigmatic non-narrative painting that probes abstract languages and representational motifs, trapping them in a shared dialogue. His surreal paintings often utilize quotidian objects and found materials to activate a whimsical cast of surrogate-human characters described as Seussian or Guston-esque. Redwood’s epic mise-en-scène evokes both chaotic and romantic visions.

His newest work pushes his figures further, specifically into narrative and human territory, foregoing his previous hybrids for a more realistic approach. In this exhibition, Redwood employs figuration to lend mystery and meaning to visual art, reinterpreting art itself and his personal experiences of the past few years. Several of the paintings prominently feature objects that have been lifted from art history. 

In the aptly titled painting “The Good Thief,” one such object is H.C. Westermann’s 1964 conceptual art piece Clean Air. Westermann’s sculpture, composed of three nested vitrines, is reincarnated here as the last remaining source of clean air in a hypothetical catastrophic moment that was meant to evoke the cloistered experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. The actors in the twilight scene are the masked thieves, sharing a straw to suck the clean air out of the sculpture; but they’re “good” thieves, too, because they tenderly approach the object and know its life-sustaining potential. The painting proposes a more nuanced path to appropriation in contemporary art today.

로스앤젤레스, 캘리포니아 – CMAY 갤러리는 네이선 레드우드의 새로운 그림 전시회인 "굿 도둑"을 선보인다. 이 전시회는 갤러리에서 작가의 두 번째 개인전으로, 전면 갤러리에는 종이에 담긴 작은 작품들이 매력적으로 전시되어 있고, 넓은 뒷공간에는 크고 역동적인 그림들이 전시되어 있다.

레드우드는 추상적인 언어와 표현적 모티브를 탐구하고 이를 공유된 대화에 가두는 수수께끼 같은 비내러티브 그림으로 유명하다.  그의 초현실적인 그림은 종종 쿼티디언 오브제를 사용하며, 시우시안 또는 구스톤풍으로 묘사되는 기발한 대리인간 캐릭터들을 활성화하는 재료를 찾는다. 레드우드의 서사적인 미장센은 혼돈적이면서도 낭만적인 비전을 불러일으킨다.

그의 최신 작품은 그의 인물들을 이야기와 인간의 영역으로 더욱 발전시키고, 이전의 혼합물을 통해 보다 현실적인 접근 방식을 제시한다.  이 전시회에서 레드우드는 시각 예술에 신비로움과 의미를 부여하기 위해 형상화를 사용하여 예술 자체와 지난 몇 년간의 개인적 경험을 재해석한다.  몇몇 그림에는 미술사에서 벗어났던 오브제가 눈에 띄게 등장한다.  

적절한 제목의 그림 "좋은 도둑"에서 이러한 오브제 중 하나는 H.C. 웨스터만의 1964년 개념 미술 작품인 깨끗한 공기이다.  세 개의 중첩된 독사로 구성된 웨스터만의 조각품은 코로나19 팬데믹의 폐쇄적인 경험을 불러일으키기 위한 가상의 재앙적인 순간에 마지막 남은 깨끗한 공기의 원천으로 환생된다.
 

 황혼 장면의 배우들은 조각품에서 깨끗한 공기를 빨아들이기 위해 빨대를 공유하는 가면을 쓴 도둑들이지만, 그들 역시 "좋은" 도둑들이다.  왜냐하면 그들은 그 오브제에 부드럽게 접근하고 생명을 유지할 수 있는 잠재력을 알기 때문이다.
