A landmark in South Korea’s artistic landscape: the country’s first event where human and artificial intelligence compete in creativity gains widespread attention.
From April 24 to 30, the 2025 HI vs AI Video Festival will be held at Picturehouse in Sinsa-dong, Seoul, marking the nation's first instance of human intelligence (HI) and artificial intelligence (AI) vying against each other in a commercial theater setting.

Han Ji-woong, who masterminded this exhibition, shared his vision: “Media art is a key content area through which Korea can lead the global art and video markets. Based on the legacy of the renowned artist Nam June Paik, we aim to develop digital media art and AI art into global standards. This exhibition is intended to explore the potential of theaters evolving into composite cultural spaces.”
Han further elaborated that the festival showcases the layered convergence of human emotion and AI-driven creations in an era where technological advancements expand the boundaries of artistic expression. By moving beyond a simple comparison, the event seeks to explore coexistence and fusion, establishing itself as the dawn of a new era in art.
Notable Participants and Exhibits
The festival boasts participation from prominent artists, both domestic and international. Among them, Yi Nam is renowned for bridging tradition and modernity, as well as Eastern and Western aesthetics, through his distinctive media art. His works have been collected by prestigious institutions like the United Nations Headquarters. Similarly, Chang Seung-hyo blends traditional Eastern painting techniques with Western landscapes to explore the interplay of light and darkness in his projects. Meanwhile, Hong Poormae, a minimalist Oriental painter, uses ink and paper to create works that delve into themes of light, shadow, healing, and communication, showcased in global exhibitions.
Additionally, artists such as Ryu Ho-yeol, Kim Bo-seul, and Kim Kyung-eun, alongside AI-based creators like SHOIN, RUDA, Bulutung, and Queenly, will present an array of works uniting tradition and modernity. Their groundbreaking media art expands artistic boundaries and offers audiences unprecedented experiences.
AI Movies and Technological Milestones
The festival also features movies created through AI technology. Films like I Am Moon-hee by Director Jung Eun-wook and works by Director Kwon Han-seul are among the lineup, offering an extraordinary glimpse into AI's role in the realm of creativity. Additionally, AI-based films produced by Studio Free Willusion, such as Poem of Doom and Tales Untold, will be screened, highlighting the intersection of technology and artistry.
